Similar to last year, I wanted the girls to wear complimentary costumes for Halloween. N. is young enough to not have a strong opinion, and K. actually came up with the idea of being Little Red Riding Hood on her own—or as she says, “Red Red Riding Hood.”So I took a trip to the fabric store and got a fun pile of red, gray, and furry fabrics, and started sewing. I hadn’t made a hood before on a garment, but they’re really straightforward. I made the cape and lined it (which I think was actually easier than not lining it), and made a simple gingham skirt.
We just used a random red shirt she had. Hey, why create what you don’t have to. I mean, a shirt is a shirt.
And the little sister got stuck as the (Big) Bad Wolf. I wanted her costume to be cute, not scary, and to just suggest a wolf—it didn’t need to be literal. And I saved money by not making the entire thing out of faux fur.
And oh, what a cute little wolf she was!
They were such a cute pair! It’s not the most unique costume pairing in the world—and we even ran into another red riding hood while we were out—but they really enjoyed it and it seemed well-suited for them.
We trick-or-treated with our neighbors (Iron Man and an Equestrian). Sorry, random neighbor in this picture—I tried to snap the photo before the door opened.
Funny expressions. N’s look says, “Get me out of here,” but she hung on as long as the older kids did. This picture was taken by this particular tree because—why else—it’s red. K. was insistent.
My favorite part was N’s tail, which swished when she walked.
She was so cute walking up to people’s doors. K. was so helpful with her (as were our other two friends) and they helped her with the steps. Much candy was collected, but I’m not going to lie: N’s bag was more full. She would stand at the door with her bag and look up with her pretty eyes and fuzzy ears and people wouldn’t be able to stop putting candy in her bag. Then she’d say “tanks” in her little voice and they’d add another piece, almost without thinking about it.
