Delightful Day

DSC_9148.We had a delicious dinner with our friends we meet with every spring.  All of the children were healthy and everyone was able to attend—it was a glorious day!  The company was good and, well, you can’t beat a steak dinner.DSC_9090..

After the meal, we took a walk with the kiddos (N is the littlest, K and C are the same age (within, I think, three months), and C’s brother is a couple of years older than him.DSC_9103.

The kiddos got to throw rocks into a pond, which is always a favorite game.  At least it was until my youngest, showing minimal awareness for others, hit her buddy square in the back of the head with a rock.  She claims it was an accident and that she was just too young to note what the trajectory of the rock was going to be; I know she aims well enough that I’m suspicious…DSC_9107.DSC_9111.

Every time N. threw a rock, she would turn around, say “yaaay,” and clap for herself.  Then she would walk to the rocks and select the largest one she could find and begin the process over again.DSC_9115.DSC_9119.

Sweet sweet K. and her daddy!DSC_9135.

Oh, those girls.  I love them so much!DSC_9142.

And N. thought that Great-Grandpa’s cane was pretty cool.  It was almost as tall as she was and she looked like Moses parting the red sea when she picked it up.DSC_9153.
Then her buddy C took a turn.DSC_9155.

Fun February

This is my final month of caching up blogging—here comes a fast February.  Please keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times.

I made the girls “sensory boxes” to play with inside, especially since it was the unfortunate combination of being cold but without glorious snow for most of the month.  These have an ocean theme, so I used blue aquarium rocks and added a couple of plastic plants, seashells, and plenty of cups and spoons for scooping.DSC_8801

It was interesting to see how the girls played differently.  N. spent her time scooping and pouring and K. sorted out the seashells, set up scenes, pretended to bake cupcakes, and even took two of the little rocks and pretended they were people.DSC_8802DSC_8807

K. has a pair of pajamas that match a pair her baby doll has, and one evening they both wore them.  Matching is always cute!DSC_8865DSC_8867DSC_8869

Auntie D. made the girls matching knit jumpers—so cute!  They fit fantastically and the girls look just darling in them.  They wore them to church and got so many compliments!DSC_8882DSC_8883DSC_8886DSC_8893

At school, K. had a week with themed dress.  One day they wore hats and silly socks (sorry, no picture, but picture K. in a hot pink cowboy hat).  Another day was “dress like what you want to be when you grow up” day.  K. chose to be an Artist.  She showed me a picture in a book she used for inspiration—an old Sesame Street book of mine with Prairie Dawn dressed up in a giant shirt as a smock and making a painting—and we found an old shirt of Dad’s to use.  We put some paint brushes in the pocket and Dad and I made her a palette (I sketched on a piece of foam board which Dad cut out and I added some paint splotches.  Don’t worry—they dried overnight). K. had another ballet recital.  It was especially fun this time because she had three friends in her class—I mean, everyone K. meets is considered a friend, but these were friends from church that she actually knew before.IMG_0338

I don’t think I had a field trip quite as fun as this as a child, but K. got to go to a local bakery, watch how they made doughnuts, and even try her hand at making one.IMG_0370IMG_0371

Interestingly, she didn’t eat much of the final product.  I know.  I’m sorry, Aunt J., I don’t know how she missed that gene.IMG_0380

Journey through January

Here’s January, all in one post!  We spent most of the month just playing around the house (besides the mornings K. was at school, of course).DSC_8752

One activity I created for the girls (I found the idea online) was to make some salt pink and let them play/write in it.  The girls were fairly focused, and I think it was a fun change from the norm.DSC_8755DSC_8759

K. did a lot of drawing in hers; N. spent more time picking up little pinches of salt and putting it back.DSC_8760

“Heeeeeey”DSC_8765

More random playing.  The green ottomans in the loft are nice for putting Mom feet up on while the girls play; they also open for a number of creative uses.IMG_0281

I walked into K’s room and found the girls, sitting together after baths and reading books.IMG_0282IMG_0286

K decorating cookies with her buddy S.  Thanks to his mom for taking this picture and the next several, and thanks also to her for watching the kiddos while I was at a piano lesson.IMG_3249IMG_3251IMG_3252

Because it had freshly snowed, I sent the girls’ boots, hats, snowpants, mittens, etc with them to play, and they got to go sledding and play outside!  As you can see, N wasn’t always certain what she was doing: “why are we out here again?  It’s cold!”IMG_3260

K. sledding down the hill in their backyard.IMG_3268IMG_3269

And a cute picture of K. and her friend A, who is so nice and one of K’s favorite friends!

Phone Photo Moments

So my phone doesn’t have fantastic photo quality, but there are moments in life that you just have to capture regardless of equipment capacity.  I pulled the photos off of my phone, and these are essentially a series of moments in our past year.

The girls found a rogue feather in the living room (undoubtedly from one of the sofa’s down pillows) and were experimenting and watching it float above the heat register.  As you can tell by N’s short hair, this is a while ago. 2011-02-12_10-50-02_885Ice cream party.  N. has a doll with her, and K. plays politely.  As the girls have gotten older, it is really fun to see how much they interact and play together.2011-02-25_17-30-30_846

The girls riding N’s rocking horse (dog) together.  The snuggles and smiles were unprompted.2011-04-27_16-03-34_638

Playing in the inflatable pool in the backyard.  Our neighborhood has a pool, too, but watching both kids and a camera doesn’t typically happen.  Dad was nice enough to set one up on the patio for some additional playing.2011-07-11_12-05-56_528

K. driving a tractor in our neighbor’s basement and N. riding behind.2011-07-22_14-09-34_903

One very pleasant evening, the girls took their babies on a walk around the block.  One of the nice things about N. at this age pushing a stroller is that she was less likely to trip.2011-08-05_18-12-22_855

Sam’s club.  I always appreciate that the girls can sit side-by-side in the cart, and it makes it one of the outings that is enjoyable and manageable (until the shoving starts, at least).2011-08-16_15-32-38_229

There is a little nature trail that at a park that is not too far of a drive from our house, so we went for a walk in the woods.2011-08-22_15-52-43_8262011-08-22_15-54-46_510And paused for a rest on a log.2011-08-22_16-01-46_896

Random picture of the curly-ness of the back of K’s hair.  She probably has a person compliment her hair approximately once a week.  It goes between being somewhat curly to mostly straight with curls on the ends.2011-09-01_15-12-48_904

The girls trying on their red riding hood and big bad wolf costumes, pre-Halloween.2011-10-19_17-16-34_6952011-10-19_17-16-40_561

And N. discovered that her costume had a tail.  It was hilarious to watch her try to catch it!2011-10-19_17-17-42_21

N. got a Viewmaster for her birthday—it was one of my favorite things I remember from childhood, and her friend J. got her one as a gift.  She politely shared it with Big Sister as well.2011-11-17_16-01-26_139

At a shopping trip to Trader Joe’s I discovered that they had N-sized carts, so I made the baby do the hard work while shopping.  She was in heaven and took her job very seriously!  So seriously, in fact, that the lady at the cash register almost forgot to card her for the bottles of wine in her cart.2011-11-28_11-20-44_166

N playing the violin.  She loves music, and every time I practice the violin she comes to the door and taps her collarbone to suggest she would like to play the violin at that moment as well.  Additionally, every time the door to the music room is open she enters, takes out the little violin, and plays it.2011-12-06_16-36-29_986

The girls sitting politely together watching TV.  At least they’re quiet together.2012-01-23_18-24-52_237
